The Forces Françaises de l'Intérieur(FFI) in 1944 unified all the French Resistance groups including the largest, the Communist Party's Francs-Tireurs et Partisans (FTP). As the 6th June Normandy landing turned into a Nothern France bridgehead the FFI proved crucial to making the Allied advance possible. Resistance fighters seized bridges, liberated villages and towns ahead of the arrival of regular army units, and collected vital intelligence on German forces that remained ahead.
